Donations

We're always on the lookout for new archival collections. We invite you to contact us if you're interested in donating materials that fit within our collecting scope.

What does the Arhoolie Foundation collect?

We collect unique archival collections related to regional and vernacular music from the United States, Mexico, and around the world. Our collections reflect the diverse interests of Chris Strachwitz and Arhoolie Records, documenting tradition-based music and the cultural communities that create it. We collect photographs, videos, sound recordings, and paper-based materials.

Selection guidelines

Given the expense of preserving and providing access to archival collections, we're selective about the materials we accept. We use the following guidelines to appraise potential donations:

  • Public Interest

We seek materials of broad public interest that speak directly to vernacular music traditions and related cultural forms. This includes the work of artists and musicians, scholars, documentarians, cultural organizations, and collectors.

  • Geography

Our collecting strengths are American and Mexican regional music traditions, and we will continue to prioritize materials from these areas in the future.

  • Uniqueness

We seek unique, culturally valuable materials and copies of originals that no longer exist for preservation and education.

How to donate

First, get in touch. Email the archivist at clark@arhoolie.org and describe your materials.

If we accept your donation, the archivist will work with you to complete a deed of gift form.

As a small institution, we do our best to process new collections efficiently. Direct monetary support can expedite our work in processing, digitizing, and publishing your donation to Digital Collections.
