Chris Strachwitz Collection
As founder of Arhoolie Records and the Arhoolie Foundation, Chris Strachwitz (1931-2023) collected, documented, recorded, and promoted regional roots music for over 60 years. In addition to recording hundreds of albums for Arhoolie Records (now owned and distributed by Smithsonian Folkways), he took over 25,000 photographs and hundreds of hours of video, corresponded with legendary recording artists, scholars, promoters, and fans, conducted dozens of rare recorded interviews, and collected all manner of roots music ephemera. Strachwitz donated much of his collection to the Arhoolie Foundation.
Over the past several years, we have made significant progress in digitizing Chris's photographs and videos. In June 2024, we will begin digitizing his papers with grant funding from the National Park Service's Save America's Treasures program.
We're excited to begin publishing this extraordinary collection on Digital Collections throughout 2024.
